    Trip Leader: Ilze Ruditis

    Cost: SCWDC Members $30 Non-members $35

Enjoy the scenery and have fun sailing on the Potomac River, whether you are a beginner or seasoned sailor. Learn the fundamentals of sailing or just relax on board.

We sail from Belle Haven Marina in Alexandria, Virginia, located south of Old Town Alexandria on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and adjacent to Dyke Marsh.

Getting Here | Belle Haven Marina

This is NOT the marina closest to Reagan-National Airport.

The sailboats are 19-foot Flying Scots, which are very stable and easy to sail. They are open boats, with no cover, so dress appropriately for the weather (sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, sun shirt, waterproof jacket and shoes/sandals that may get wet).  Also bring a water bottle on board. The group meets at the marina, outside the office, which is a trailer, and not at the dock.

You are in good hands with a skipper on each boat, who are club members with extensive sailing experience.

Weather permitting, we sail for two hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays through mid-November (see the sailing schedule for the dates, times and to sign up). To ensure you get on a boat, reservations are required two days in advance on the sign-up page.

The cost for SCWDC members is $30 cash per sail and non-members are welcome for $35.  Pay in cash (the exact amount would be appreciated) to the SCWDC volunteer trip leader before the sail begins. Check-in is 15 minutes before the sail so we can get out on time.

Before your first sail of the season, you MUST sign an online sailing liability waiver (acknowledgement of risks) that is required by Belle Haven Marina.

    https://app.cleverwaiver.com/render/templateByRefId/6075cb3b4cc416a51d3747f2

This only needs to be done once during each sailing season. If you forget, you may come early to the marina office to sign the waiver.

We do not sail if it is raining, or if there is not enough or too much wind.  The trip leader will notify you by email if a sail is canceled. If you sign up and then cannot come, send a text or email to the trip leader as soon as possible.

After sailing, we continue socializing (at your own expense) at The Haven, a small, casual restaurant that is very close to the marina.  It is located at 1401 Belle Haven Road, Alexandria, VA 22307.

    Trip Leaders Needed
The sailing program depends on volunteer trip leaders and skippers to keep it going. We need a trip leader to organize each sail, which includes keeping track of the number of participants, determining how many boats are needed and paying for the boats. It’s not difficult and the best part is you get to sail for free every time you trip lead! To volunteer, contact program chair, Debby Block at dtblock@aol.com or 703-967-0121.

To volunteer, contact program chair, Debby Block: dtblock@aol.com or 703-967-0121.

TRIP INSURANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SEE DETAILS HERE.

    Resort:

Beaver Creek is just 10 miles from Vail and is as "chic" as you can get! Beaver Creek is a fascinating resort undergoing the evolution of the global ski industry. It has many claims to fame, most notably that it opened recently in 1980 and is one of the "youngest" of the world's ski areas. As a result of its modern evolution, it is also sometimes described as "the first resort to be designed by computer" (and if so, it's a good argument in favor of computers!)

The village is pedestrian-friendly and swamped with beautiful up-market hotels, restaurants, condos, heated pavements, and pedestrian escalators - obviously! And don't forget the three o'clock chocolate chip cookies waiting for you when you ski down at the end of the day.

    Discover Beaver Creek

    The Mountain:

High-speed chairlifts serve the slopes, and you rarely have to wait long. The slopes cover a vast area from Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead to Spruce Saddle, plus a whole new area for beginners. Enjoy skiing over 2,082 acres on 167 runs, more than enough to keep any skier happy for a week.

Beaver Creek is a high-altitude resort with a summit elevation of 11,440 ft., a base elevation of 8.100 ft., and a vertical rise of 3,340 ft. 25 lifts, including two gondolas, service the slopes. The ski runs and terrain parks suit all levels, from beginners to advanced, with 28% beginner, 38% Intermediate, and 34% advanced. It is one of Colorado's most family-friendly resorts.

The nearby town of Avon, accessible to the base of Bachelor Gulch via Chondola, also offers many lodging options and restaurants. If your ski legs are too tired to walk to dinner, a Beaver Creek Resort shuttle service is available.

With your Epic Pass, you can also access Vail, Breckenridge, and Keystone (you'll need to check for transportation options).

Ski Jackson Hole, WYOMING, January 17 - 24

BASE PRICE: $1,515 (w/o lift tickets)

    Trip Leader:  Mark raby

TRIP INSURANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SEE DETAILS HERE.

Resort: Aptly nicknamed "The Big One," Jackson Hole has some of the most challenging skiing in all of North America. Despite its deserved hard-core reputation, there are plenty of intermediate runs.  Jackson Hole is highly ranked by Ski Magazine Readers for terrain variety.  Recent upgrades to the intermediate ski and snowboard experience have resulted in their 131 named trails being rated 40% Intermediate and 10% Beginner.  The remaining 50% are still available for experts, as is the 3,000+ acres of Backcountry terrain.

Piste Bistro, set at the top of the Bridger Gondola is the on-mountain lunch stop with its fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling window views. Both Teton Village and the nearby town of Jackson offer a ton of honky tonk après-ski diversions (the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is legendary) as well as seriously good dining options.

While the resort’s base at Teton Village is a lively scene, the town of Jackson, 12 miles away, has an après ski life of its own, from champagne-popping oyster bars to dives reminiscent of the Jackson Hole valley a century ago.

    Mountain:
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has 2,500 skiable acres inbound, and a further 3,000 of backcountry for advanced skiers to explore. The summit elevation is 10,450 ft., with a base elevation of 6,311 ft. There are 16 lifts at Jackson, including a 100-person aerial tram, two gondolas and 11 chairlifts, accommodating 16,733 people an hour on the resort’s lift system. There is no night skiing at Jackson Hole, though there is tubing both at Kings Tubes in Jackson and at the Ice Castle in Teton Village at the base of the resort. There is also ice skating in Jackson’s town square, with ice skate rentals available.

    Lodging:

With 140 rooms and suites, an extended continental breakfast, an outdoor hot tub, an indoor hot tub, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness room , and complimentary high-speed internet, the recently remodeled 49er Inns and Suites can accommodate all of our lodging needs.

Set among Jackson Hole's restaurants, shopping, art galleries, and night spots, the 49er Inns and Suites is just three blocks from Jackson’s historic town square and a short walk to the world-famous Cowboy Bar.

The Studio suites offer double Queen beds, a sitting area, a microwave, a refrigerator, a wet bar, a coffee maker, and high-speed Internet. See amenities, lodging details, and photos HERE

    Resort:

Steamboat Springs is nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, off the beaten path but still within reach. If you’re looking for an authentic mountain town, steeped in adventure, history, and culture yet full of modern amenities, that are as big as the Rockies themselves, check out Off-Piste Activities in Steamboat Springs. Be sure to check out the Old Town Hot Springs (which Skiing magazine labels as the best hot springs at any ski resort). Other possible adventures include horseback riding, sleigh rides, ice skating, powder skiing, and Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Whether you choose Ski Time Square or other well-known dining spots, your apres-ski and dining experience will be as memorable as your on-the-mountain one.

    What's new:

    Full Steam Ahead - YouTube

    Mountain:
The mountain offers 3,670 vertical feet, 2,965 skiable acres of terrain, 20 lifts, and 354" average annual snowfall.  All levels of skiers/boarders will have fun since the slopes are divided approximately with 20% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 40% advanced. Max elevation here is 10,568 feet—that’s low by Colorado standards, which means no altitude sickness—so there are no bowls above the tree line. Instead, these forested mountainsides include some of the finest glades in the West. Seemingly endless runs such as Closet and Shadows extend the arboreal bliss for nearly 2,000 vertical feet. Hit them when they’re fluffed with Steamboat’s ultra-dry “Champagne” powder, and you understand why this resort has developed a cult-like cadre of devotees.

What's New: Steamboat has undergone a significant transformation over the last several years, and now that the new gondola and the Pioneer Ridge terrain expansion are open, skiers will be able to see the whole vision for this northern Colorado destination resort. Readers are already noticing the upgrades and the positive changes they noticed last winter. “The new Wild Blue Gondola is a great addition, and the new terrain expansion was a blast to ski,” said one. For more information, here's your link: Winter in Steamboat Springs Colorado. Steamboat honors the Ikon Pass; if buying an Ikon Pass product, please read the terms and conditions carefully before purchasing.

LOCAL TIP: "Bloody Mary's" abound, but Thunderhead Red’s (at the top of the gondola) outpaces the pack with a Breakfast Bloody that garnishes house-infused vodka with pickled veggies, hard-boiled egg, and maple-glazed bacon.

    Resort:

Located off the beaten path, Crested Butte is known for some of the best lift-served extreme terrain in the nation but with plenty to offer beginners and intermediate skiers. Home to quirky costume events and our friendly vibe, Crested Butte is a place you want to add to your bucket list.

Crested Butte is one of the few places that can still be called a real Colorado ski town. When you walk around town, you’ll feel it in the unparalleled views and the meticulously preserved false-front buildings reminiscent of its mining days. Buses into the town of Crested Butte run every 15 minutes from 7:10 AM to midnight. Visit the shops, restaurants and soak in the ambiance.

There are no traffic lights, no chain stores and no high-rise buildings. Yet you’ll quickly see there’s no shortage of entertainment and dining options, all run by some of the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet.

If you are not a skier or snowboarder, there are still a plethora of activities for you to enjoy as well- surrounded by 1.7 million acres of National Forest, you can snowshoe, fat bike, and cross country ski, right out your front door in any direction.

Colorado Skiing - Crested Butte - YouTube

    Mountain:
As the birthplace of inbounds extreme terrain, our mountain promises to feed your appetite for challenge and captivate your heart. Home to 2,700 vertical feet and 1,500 acres, quirky costume events like the Al Johnson Memorial Telemark Race, and the freedom to be who you are (not what's expected). There is also plenty of skiing for beginners and intermediates.

New in 2021/2022: We all aspire to do big things. If your big thing means one day slashing turns in Crested Butte’s world-renowned Extreme Limits terrain, Peachtree Lift will help you get there. It’s your stepping stone to the steeps, a new, three-person fixed-grip lift serving beginner terrain at the base of the resort. The new lift will increase uphill capacity by 50 percent, resulting in quicker access to the mountain and relief to nearby learning areas. Peachtree’s location adjacent to the Aspen and Pine conveyor lifts is the ideal spot for skiers and riders just learning the sport to enhance their skills and progress into terrain accessed by a chairlift.

The benefits don’t stop there. The project included grading of terrain to create a more consistent pitch across the entire slope, allowing beginners to focus on the fundamentals. After all, learning to ski or ride should be both fun and easy.

    Nordic/Cross Country Skiing

The Crested Butte Nordic Center offers over 50 km of professionally groomed trails through meadows, forests, and foothills. Perfect for both classic and skate skiing—rentals, lessons, and guided tours available.

Whitefish is the Heart of a Winter Paradise

Voted number 6 by Ski Magazine readers for Western Ski Resorts. Whitefish Mountain has over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain ranging from blue groomers, glades, steeps, and chutes. Start the day on a long blue groomer aptly titled "Inspiration," then take in the views of Glacier National Park and the valley. If you want more blues, stay on the front side or head to the Northside. If you're looking for thigh-burning steeps, glades, or chutes, Hellroaring Basin is the place for you. Don't miss the skiing in the North Bowl. For fans of Terrain Parks, there are four featuring boxes, rails, and jumps. Additionally, there is a Skier/Boarder cross course known as the Goat Haunt with banked turns, jumps, and rollers. There is plenty to keep everyone busy for the typical ski week and longer. With short to no lift lines, everyone will rack up the vertical feet. You also might see a Snow Ghost.

    Whistler/Blackcomb Video

    Resort:
Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada, located just north of Vancouver, is the largest ski resort in North America. Whistler Blackcomb ski resort consists of the interconnected Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain, each a destination in its own right. It has an incredible combined 8,171 acres of terrain. The Mountain looms over the pedestrian-only European-style village, which hosted the Olympics in 2010. You will find trendy boutiques, retail shops, a grocery store, coffee shops, a wide variety of world-class restaurants, and numerous apres-ski hot spots.

    Mountain:
It's not hyperbole to say that Whistler Blackcomb is a behemoth with 8,171 acres and a huge vertical drop of 7,165 ft. with over 200 marked trails blanketed by 460" of snow each year, and plenty of off-piste opportunities. The Whistler ski resort is so big that instead of having a trail map, they have an atlas!

The skiing and snowboarding terrain varies incredibly from gentle slopes and wide groomed cruisers to tree skiing, steep alpine bowls, couloirs, a glacier, and terrain parks. No other resort offers so much variety. Whistler Resort is suitable for all skiers and snowboarders, from first-timers to extreme riders who want to ride hair-raising steeps. You'll never forget the beauty of a bluebird day at Whistler!

            Trip Overview

Join SCWDC Guided Vacations in Scandinavia, Denmark, and Sweden with VBT, a highly rated bike tour company which your leader has used multiple time.  The Tour is rated Easy, and choice of E-bikes, hybrids or road bike is complimentary , as are the bike helmets.  If you’re not familiar with the Swedish Riviera, it’s a thing. The sandy beaches of Torekov and Båstad have long been the summer haven of Sweden’s social elite—and the shoreline drips with opulence and distinctive Swedish charm. Starting in Denmark, your local leaders will introduce you to the region’s heritage in regal settings—including a visit to Helsingør, the castle said to be the setting of Shakepeare’s Hamlet. Cycle easy paths through the pristine forests of Småland, returning to an ancient manor house that’s been a frequent retreat of Swedish royalty for centuries. Your leaders will be delighted to introduce you to traditional Swedish folklore during a festive evening of song and dance—and of course a boisterous, and delicious, Swedish barbecue that’s nothing like anything you could ever experience back home.

Located on the southern peninsula of Hokkaido Island, the Niseko United ski resort complex is the largest and most famed destination in Japan. Niseko United is truly the powder paradise rumors claim it to be—it gets 590 inches, or almost 50 feet, of powder snow on average per season. But it’s not only Niseko's powder that’s the best in Japan; for expert skiers and riders, nothing competes with Niseko’s off-piste, side-country skiing.

At 62 miles from the bustling city of Sapporo, Niseko, the main base village of Grand Hirafu is quite accessible for both international travelers and city site-seers. The resort is very close to Mt. Yōtei or “the Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido,” and the views contribute to Niseko United's status as the star of Japan’s ski resorts, adding to the picturesque charm of this winter paradise.

The resort comprises four interconnected base areas: Annupuri, Niseko Village, Hirafu and Hanazono, all of which offer a unique dining and lodging experience. Easily accessible via a 2.5-hour drive from New Chitose Airport, Niseko is a convenient destination for both domestic and international travelers. The resort's well-connected transportation system ensures smooth travel within the area, allowing visitors to explore the different ski areas seamlessly.

The hotel is also located a short distance from the Evergreen Outdoor Center, your source for ski/snowboard/park lessons and back country guides (back country tours from the alpine towering above Hakuba to some of the worlds best tree runs, snowshoe tours, evening snowshoe fondue tours and cross country tours on Olympic courses and forest trails).

                  Japanes monkeys in hot springs

Optional daily excursions are available from the hotel or nearby transportation center. Excursion possibilities include Jigokudani Monkey Park (Snow Monkeys), local sake distillery and microbrewery tour, and exploring Zenkoji Temple, one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in the country.

After a day of skiing/snowboarding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, or sight seeing, you can enjoy the hotel's Onsen (natural hot spring pool).  No need for hot tubs.
