Resort:

Since 1961, Zermatt has been closed to traffic. The Bahnhofstrasse is the domain of horse-drawn carriages; strolling along the streets is a pleasure. The Bahnhofstrasse is Zermatt’s main street, and a delight to walk along at any time with its bars, restaurants, boutiques, souvenir shops, bakeries and shops selling cakes and chocolates. From the steps of the church of St. Mauritius or from the Kirchbrücke bridge, visitors enjoy a fine view to the south-west of the Matterhorn rising majestically into the sky. Depending on weather, the peak may be sparkling in the sunshine or adorned with clouds.

Mountain:

Zermatt is home to the Matterhorn Ski Paradise, the highest ski area in the Alps, where Swiss hospitality meets Italian lifestyle.  With breathtaking pistes, stunning views, amazing restaurants, and a wide range of activities, a ski/snowboard trip to Zermatt should be on every skier's/snowboarder's "bucket" list.

Ski adventures for altitude fans: the “Matterhorn ski safari gold” covers 12,500 metres of altitude, the “Matterhorn ski safari silver” 10,500. You will never go down the same piste twice! Take a selfie in front of the Matterhorn – from a different perspective on each panoramic mountain, all of them in one single day as you are following the circuit up and down…

Mountain attributes:

  • Base elevation:  1,620 meters (5,314')
  • Summit:  3,883 meters (12,740')
  • Skiable terrain:  360 km (223 miles)
  • 21% blue (easy) | 61% red (intermediate) | 18% black (expert) slopes

Let's not forget skiing across the border in Italy at Cervinia. Cervinia’s high open slopes are divided between three main sectors. The Plan Maison area is ideal for confidence building, with lots of long gentle runs of up to 1400m vertical. The Laghi Cime Bianche sector is slightly steeper but with even longer pistes of up to 1800m vertical from the top of the Klein Matterhorn, high on the Swiss border. This area is also connected to a network of runs above the village of Valtournenche, down the valley from Cervinia.
