We sail from Belle Haven Marina in Alexandria, Virginia, located south of Old Town Alexandria on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and adjacent to Dyke Marsh.

Getting Here | Belle Haven Marina

This is NOT the marina closest to Reagan-National Airport.

The sailboats are 19-foot Flying Scots, which are very stable and easy to sail. They are open boats, with no cover, so dress appropriately for the weather (sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, sun shirt, waterproof jacket and shoes/sandals that may get wet). Also bring a water bottle on board. The group meets at the marina, outside the office, which is a trailer, and not at the dock.

You are in good hands with a skipper on each boat, who are club members with extensive sailing experience.

Weather permitting, we sail for two hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays through mid-November (see the sailing schedule for the dates, times and to sign up). To ensure you get on a boat, reservations are required two days in advance on the sign-up page.

The cost for SCWDC members is $30 cash per sail and non-members are welcome for $35. Pay in cash (the exact amount would be appreciated) to the SCWDC volunteer trip leader before the sail begins. Check-in is 15 minutes before the sail so we can get out on time.

Before your first sail of the season, you MUST sign an online sailing liability waiver (acknowledgement of risks) that is required by Belle Haven Marina.

We do not sail if it is raining, or if there is not enough or too much wind. The trip leader will notify you by email if a sail is canceled. If you sign up and then cannot come, send a text or email to the trip leader as soon as possible.

After sailing, we continue socializing (at your own expense) at The Haven, a small, casual restaurant that is very close to the marina. It is located at 1401 Belle Haven Road, Alexandria, VA 22307.

Trip Leaders Needed
The sailing program depends on volunteer trip leaders and skippers to keep it going. We need a trip leader to organize each sail, which includes keeping track of the number of participants, determining how many boats are needed and paying for the boats. This ride starts in Shirlington and heads West on the Four Mile Run Trail. At Walter Reed Drive we cross over to Four Mile run to pick up the W&OD trail and head west. We make a right on the Custis Trail and take that to Rosslyn where we pick up the Mt. Vernon trail (near Theodore Rosevelt Island). We head South on the Mt. Vernon trail and at the end of National Airport veer left to go under the GW Parkway on the Four Mile Run Trail back to Shirlington.

Optional lunch with the group in Shirlington after the ride. There are lots of great places to eat there!

This golf getaway will offer challenging golf, luxurious lodging, indulgent spa experiences, and invigorating sports and fitness options at the Heritage Hills Resort. Unique dining experiences are available both inside and on the outside patio and upstairs deck at Heritage Hills Resort.

On Friday, we'll golf Briarwood Golf Club, featured on the Golf Digest Must Play List and played host to the Futures Lady Professional Golf Tour for 10 years. Briarwood’s “18” championship holes lie in a peaceful, rural setting nestled in the gently, rolling hills of South Central Pennsylvania. In 2011 the course went through a complete tee complex and bunkers renovation which enhanced the spacious, contoured fairways and great greens to provide enjoyable rounds for players of all abilities.

Saturday, we'll head to Honey Run Golf Club, a championship course which has hosted numerous amateur and professional golf events and outings including the Nike Tour and LPGA Futures Tour. Honey Run was designed by the noted golf course architect Edmond Ault and considered by many to be one of the “Best” course layouts in Central Pennsylvania.

Sunday, we'll stay at Heritage Hills to play their traditional golf course, designed to challenge and enthrall experienced players and casual players alike with its beautifully maintained fairways, native shrubbery, and cool waterways. The greens are the backdrop to this 18-hole championship course spread across nearly 6,500 yards of rolling terrain.

Cancellations: A $45 cancellation fee applies to all cancellations. Cancellations after June 15, 2026, will also be liable for all unrecoverable expenses, including 3% credit card transaction fees. Additionally, all or any credits to be made will be charged a minimal processing fee of 5% for any such refunds or the following percentages.

Route Under Construction!

This is last years route: This ride starts at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, then heads north on Anacostia Northeast Branch Trail, passing the historic College Park Airport, to Lake Artemesia, and around the small lake. We then go west on Piney Branch Trail a very short distance, then turn south on the Trolley Trail. Due to recent extensive improvements, the Trolley Trail now connects directly back into the Anacostia Tributary Trail System, and we return to Bladensburg Waterfront Park. From the Waterfront Park, those who wish may bicycle 2.4 miles south on the Anacostia River Trail to Kenilworth Gardens, where lotus and lilies are in full bloom. There are bathrooms and shaded picnic tables at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, so riders can bring a picnic lunch if they wish, and wander and enjoy the lilies as long as they wish. It is then a 2.4 mile ride on the Anacostia River Trail back to Bladensburg Waterfront Park. where cars are parked.

This ride will start at Draper Drive Park where we take a very short ride to the trail head and ride cool & shady trails to Lake Accotink. It's all paved until mile 8 when we hit dirt and gravel for an about a mile+ around the Lake. We'll go 10 miles then loop back to the start.

*Hybrid, gravel or mountain bike recommended.

For those that want to have lunch, we'll meet at PJ Skidoos right down the road upon return.

This ride starts on the Capital Crescent trail and goes through a Bethesda/Chevy Chase neighborhood for 2 miles to pick up Beach Drive. Beach Drive is closed on weekends to thru traffic. Park traffic is allowed on some of the segments, but they go slow and there are not many cars. Back side of the loop goes by Pierce Mill and the Smithsonian National Zoo on the Rock Creek Bike Trail and thru Georgetown’s Waterfront where we pick up the Capitol Crescent trail again to return to Fletchers.

We’ll stop at the Georgetown Waterfront for lunch at Guapo's Mexican restaurant then peddle the 3 miles back to Fletchers. For those who don’t want lunch - you can park in Georgetown and meet us at Fletchers OR do the 3 miles on your own (head down Water Street on the Capitol Crest Trail to Fletchers Cove). 19.55 miles.

Rock Creek-Beach Drive Out & Back

Meet in the parking lot at Rock Creek Picnic Area #1 (near. Pierce Mill). We'll do an out-and-back beginning at Picnic Area #1. On the trail, we will pass the Smithsonian National Zoo and head onto Beach Drive which is closed on the weekend so there is plenty of room to spread out! We'll stay on Rock Creek Trail for 10 miles, take a water break (bring a light snack if you want one) then head back. After the ride, there's an optional lunch at Dog Haus Biergarten Van Ness (Washington DC), 4340 Connecticut Ave NW Retail Space #5, Washington, DC 20008 (a 1 mile bike ride or you can drive there).

Friday, we'll head to Ravenwood Golf Club, an award-winning 18 hole course. Considered to be the top public golf course in the area, Ravenwood was selected by Golf Digest as the 5th "Best New" public golf course to open in the United States in 2003. Ravenwood has hosted many USGA & PGA qualifiers as well as the home of the 2003 & 2009 New York Men's Amateur Golf Championships. The championship golf course layout has bent grass tees, greens and fairways but with five sets of tees, it can be a fair and challenging test for golfers of all skill levels.

Saturday brings us to The Links at Greystone, with a maximum length of 7,215 yards, a course rating of 74.3 and a slope of 130. The Links has a championship-caliber layout worthy of Golf Digest's coveted 4.5 Star Rating. Only a handful of other golf courses across the country have ever been rated better.

Sunday, take a break to enjoy the Finger Lakes! The area is home to many local breweries and nearly a hundred wineries, so explore on your own or go with Crush Beer & Wine Tours which specializes in private Finger Lakes wine tours and guided winery experiences across New York’s premier wine region. They offer professionally chauffeured winery tours and wine tastings throughout the Finger Lakes, including Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, and Keuka Lake. Or, take advantage of the hotel's close proximity to the Erie Canal Trail, which runs parallel to the canal, is an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, jogging, and biking.

Monday, we'll golf at Reservoir Creek Golf Club, a beautiful course with expansive vistas and challenging holes for all levels of play. Rated the #1 public course in Rochester, NY by GOLF Magazine in May 2023, Reservoir Creek is a par 71 course, and a hidden gem south of Canandaigua Lake with a maximum length of 6,294 yards.

Vernon Trail, through Old Town Alexandria, cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to National Harbor. Then loop back and return to Columbia Island Marina in time for BTTS!

Back to the Slopes Party at Island Time Bar & Grill from 4 to 7pm

There is a cost for the BTTS Party - be sure to register early! Chill out after the ride, mingle with fellow SCWDC members, and enjoy some heavy hors d'oevres. Hang to see if you are a lucky raffle prize winner, visit exhibits from our favorite sports partners.

On our way to Ocean City, we'll enjoy a round of golf at Nutters Crossing which offers beautiful lush fairways rolling over gently sloping hills, past eight water hazards and through a maze of over 50 bunkers, to rolling greens built to USGA specifications.

Then we'll make our way to the Hilton Garden Inn Ocean City Oceanfront, located steps from the beach and the historic Boardwalk’s shops and eateries. Enjoy ocean views from a private balcony in every room, restaurants, and the indoor pool.

Relax Wednesday morning before we reconvene for another round of golf at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links. This Scottish-style links is the only area course to feature bent-grass on the fairways and greens. No less than 17 of the 18 holes have a bay view with several holes having direct bay frontage, where you can start your ball over the water to shorten the hole. The Dyes have certainly created situations of risk and reward that will quicken the heart rate of even the most experienced golfer. From the back tees this championship quality course is capable of hosting a PGA Tour stop but forgiving enough from the middle tees to satisfy golfers of all skill levels.

Before heading home on Thursday, we'll stop for a final round of golf at Newport Bay Golf Course and Ocean City Golf Club. The Newport Bay Course at Ocean City Golf Club is one of the most beautiful and scenic golf course in Ocean City MD and on the East Coast. All 18 holes feature bay or marsh views. The scenic views coupled with the challenging course layout will certainly make Newport Bay one of your favorite golf courses. Newport Bay’s design challenges golfers of all levels. The course layout will test your strategic thinking abilities as the subtle contours bring traps and hazards in play at every turn… all while enjoying the most beautiful golf course setting in the Mid-Atlantic.

Enjoy three rounds of golf near the Virginia Beach resort area while staying in the ocean-front Marriott Courtyard Virginia Beach.

On Tuesday, we’ll begin with 18 holes at the Pete Dye designed Virginia Beach National Golf Club , which plays to a par of 72 from four tees ranging from 5,124 to 7054 in length, with a rating/slope from 73.8/130 to 74/136.

Wednesday we'll play at Cypress Point Country Club,, an 18-hole, Tom Clark designed 72-par course featuring Bermuda fairways and Bentgrass greens. This course offers 4 tees ranging from 5,248 to 6,541 in length with a rating/slope from 70.6/121 to 71.1/124. The course, nestled in a quiet, out of the way, golf-club community adjoining Lake Lawson and Lake Smith, is a nine time winner of the VA Pilot’s “Best of the Best” Award.

Prior to returning home, we'll play the Heron Ridge Golf Club, a public, 72-par, 18-hole championship course designed by Gene Bates & Fred Couples. Known for its natural beauty, featuring wetlands, lakes, elevation changes, and mature trees, this course offers 5 tees ranging from 5011 to 7017 yards with a rating/slope from 68.5/111 to 73.9/131. Heron Ridge has a full practice facility (driving range, putting green) and a clubhouse with dining.

Between rounds, we’ll stay in one of the top Virginia Beach oceanfront hotels, the Marriott Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South where sand meets surf & the boardwalk bids outdoor entertainment. The hotel offers spacious, beachfront rooms with private balconies and sweeping views of the Atlantic. The hotel has an on-site restaurant, a 24-hour fitness center, and heated indoor pool. This facility is conveniently located in the heart of the oceanfront resort area, within walking distance of local restaurants and nightlife. Of note: while the room fee does not include breakfast, this location gives folks many breakfast dining options.

100% genuine West Virginia snow!! Great skiing and boarding begins with great snow and a peak elevation of 4,280 ft. Canaan Valley Ski Resort offers an 850 ft. vertical drop, the longest run at 6,000 feet, 39 slopes, and 150” of annual snowfall, along with the beauty of a West Virginia ski resort.

This SPE (Ski/Snowboard Performance Enhancement) Weekend includes three days of skiing and/or boarding. By popular demand, a two-night option is again available for those who want to ski/board only on Saturday and Sunday. All participants will receive two half-day small group lessons with the Club's ski school volunteers at Canaan Valley Resort. Our PSIA/AASI-certified instructors will help you achieve your goals, whether you have never skied before or are an expert looking to refine your technique. Ski School instructors are volunteers, so gratuities are graciously accepted. Three-night participants will ski/board at the uncrowded Timberline on Monday. Participants who are 70 and older receive a complimentary two-day lift ticket at Canaan Valley!

Participants will stay at the well-appointed resort lodge in spacious lodge rooms. The lodge features an indoor heated pool, whirlpool, Sauna, and Fitness Center. Families and friends can book one of our two exclusive 4-bedroom deluxe Cottages. Contact the trip leader for pricing for the trip amenities, e.g., lift tickets, lessons, etc., for your group of one to eight occupants. Whitefish is the Heart of a Winter Paradise

Voted number 6 by Ski Magazine readers for Western Ski Resorts. Whitefish Mountain has over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain ranging from blue groomers, glades, steeps, and chutes. Start the day on a long blue groomer aptly titled "Inspiration," then take in the views of Glacier National Park and the valley. If you want more blues, stay on the front side or head to the Northside. If you're looking for thigh-burning steeps, glades, or chutes, Hellroaring Basin is the place for you. Don't miss the skiing in the North Bowl. For fans of Terrain Parks, there are four featuring boxes, rails, and jumps. Additionally, there is a Skier/Boarder cross course known as the Goat Haunt with banked turns, jumps, and rollers. There is plenty to keep everyone busy for the typical ski week and longer. Whitefish is surrounded by a wide variety of trail systems for all abilities. If you want to get a good workout on your skate skis, head to the Glacier Nordic Club trails at the Big Mountain Trailhead or Whitefish Lake Golf Course. Suppose you want to experience the magic of Glacier National Park without the summer crowds. In that case, you're in luck -- Glacier National Park is open 365 days a year, and cross-country skiing is the perfect way to experience it in winter. It's the biggest terrain you've never skied! Part of the Powder Highway it is no wonder that Panorama is a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, alpine winter paragliding, heli-skiing and snowmobiling. Panorama Mountain boasts one of the largest verticals in Canada and with 120 named runs, 5000 square kilometers of heli skiing terrain and a bowl named Paradise just for snowmobiling, there is something to keep everyone entertained.

Glide down endless, meandering, corduroy cruisers, or watch future Olympians rip down meticulously manicured race courses. Tackle the freshly gladed, powdery paradise of Taynton Bowl, with its over 750 acres of ex-heliskiing glory, or drop in to the Extreme Dream Zone and see if your turns are tighter than the spacing of the trees. Mountain:

Panorama is renowned for the whopping big ski vertical at 4,265'. The 2,847 acres of ski terrain is all below the tree line, so there are plenty of opportunities for enjoying the gladed areas and 129 lift-serviced runs. The pièce de résistance of the resort is the double black diamond tree skiing in the Extreme Dream Zone, and also the backcountry-type area in Taynton Bowl, formerly heli-skiing terrain. Most of the terrain is well suited to intermediates with many wide cruising groomers, and there are also beginner trails and terrain parks.

Panorama is ranked as #1 resort for most space per skier among the world’s 100 largest ski areas. What does this mean? Think vast areas of skiable terrain, wide open groomed runs and a selection of chairlifts that efficiently spreads people out across the mountain.

It's More Than a Ski Trip—It's a French Getaway! You don't have to be skier to enjoy this Francophile travel destination! Between the three of them, you’ll find runs for every style and ability, so take your pick and get ready for a beauty day of skiing or snowboarding at a Québec City ski resort.

We'll visit a day at each of the three ski resorts, daily bus transportation provided. An optional three day lift package is available, one day to each of the three ski resort. An optional 4th day of skiing is also available, to Stoneham.

It's a French Get Away Travel Experience: A cultural and geographic crossroads, Québec City is a bridge between Europe and the Americas and a proud guardian of the French language in the New World. It’s a wonderful destination to practice your French and to experience a wide array of attractions and events that celebrate its francophone roots.

We're staying near the Quebec City wall, also known as the ramparts. The hotel is a short walking distance many attractions, or a short Uber/Lyft ride away. The ramparts are a historic fortification that surrounds Old Quebec, dating back to 1690. Mountains:

Le Massif de Charlevoix, located about 90 minutes from Quebec City, is one of the most unique ski resorts in eastern North America thanks to its dramatic terrain overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The resort features 53 trails, a 770 meter vertical drop, abundant natural snowfall, and a strong reputation for advanced glades, steep groomers, and uncrowded skiing. Le Massif is especially known for the sensation of skiing directly toward the river, creating some of the most scenic views on the East Coast, while still offering quality terrain for intermediates and families. Beyond skiing, the resort has expanded into a full destination experience with modern ski in ski out lodging, upscale dining, and the all inclusive Club Med Quebec Charlevoix at the base of the mountain.
Mont -Sainte -Anne rises 625 meters above the Saint Lawrence Valley and lays out 71 trails across three mountain faces with roughly 547 acres of skiable terrain. A freshly restored high-speed gondola and several swift chairs whisk skiers up 2,050 vertical feet in minutes, keeping laps quick. Snowmaking on about 80 percent of the mountain backs up the 475 centimeters of annual snowfall to deliver reliable coverage from late November through April. Night owls can carve until after dark on 19 illuminated runs, giving the resort the highest vertical night skiing in Canada. Just forty minutes northeast of Quebec City, Mont- Sainte- Anne pairs European-style charm, sweeping Saint Lawrence views, and big-mountain variety into an accessible Quebec ski adventure.
Stoneham Mountain Resort sits about twenty minutes north of Quebec City and offers forty three daytime trails across three linked mountains that range from gentle cruisers to double black tree runs. Three high speed quad chairs and additional lifts move riders over three hundred forty five meters of vertical quickly while keeping queues short. Snowmaking on roughly eighty six percent of the terrain backs up an average four hundred thirty centimeters of annual snowfall, and nineteen illuminated runs create one of the largest night skiing playgrounds in Canada. Well kept terrain parks, a half pipe, and lively slope side bars keep the energy high after the last groomer, with ski in ski out lodging adding extra convenience. Easy access via Highway seventy three makes Stoneham a no fuss choice for groups looking for variety packed days and vibrant après nights in the Quebec City region.

Resort:
Palisades Tahoe formerly Squaw Valley earned its reputation as a world class ski resort hosting the 1960 Olympics. Skiing operations sprawl across 6 peaks with views of Lake Tahoe located about 10 miles away. Palisades Tahoe boasts 4,000 acres and combined with 2,400 acres at Alpine Meadows, a short gondola ride away, it is one of the largest resorts in North America. Check out the High Camp uniquely situated on the top of the mountain. The pedestrian friendly village is host to numerous restaurants and shops, a luxury spa, ice skating, and more. Want a day off, head to the charming and historic town of Truckee to enjoy lunch, visit a brewery, or shop for unique and local artisan crafts.

Mountain:

Palisades Tahoe’s terrain is spread across two mountains, connected by the Base to Base Gondola. Palisades is home to iconic expert zones like KT-22, Headwall, and Silverado, while Alpine offers a mix of bowls, groomed cruisers, and tree-lined descents. The resort’s vertical drop of 2,850 ft and summit elevation of 9,050 ft provide ample variety across 97.5 miles of skiable terrain. With 270 trails and 36 lifts, skiers can explore everything from mellow slopes to technical steeps.

Beginners will appreciate the learning areas near Far East Express and Mountain Meadow, where wide, gentle runs allow for easy progression. Big Blue Express and Gold Coast Express offer access to intermediate terrain with scenic views and consistent grooming. Families often gravitate to the Gold Coast zone for its central location and proximity to dining and rest areas.

Intermediate skiers can explore Shirley Lake and Wa She Shu zones, which feature long blue runs and natural progression routes. The Red Dog lift provides access to Lake View and Resort Chair terrain, ideal for warm-up laps and scenic descents. These areas offer a balance of challenge and comfort, making them popular throughout the day.

Advanced and expert skiers head straight to KT-22, known as “The Mothership,” for legendary lines like Chute 75, The Fingers, and West Face. (1) Cortina d'Ampezzo, commonly referred to as Cortina, is located in the heart of the southern (Dolomitic) Alps in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Situated on the Boite river, in an alpine valley, it is a winter sport resort known for its skiing trails, scenery, accommodation, shops and après-ski scene, and for its jet set and aristocratic European crowd.

Verona was made famous by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The actual location is a mob scene of tourists but the rest of Verona is packed with genuine history. Because ancient Romans considered Verona an ideal resting spot before crossing the Alps, the city has a wealth of Roman ruins. The well-preserved amphitheater — the third largest in the Roman world — dates from the first century AD and still retains most of its original stone. Over the centuries, crowds here of up to 25,000 spectators have cheered Roman gladiator battles, medieval executions, and modern plays — including Verona's popular summer opera festival, which takes advantage of the arena's famous acoustics. There’s something about Verona that just stays with you. Maybe it’s the history, the romance woven into everyday life, or the way the city feels effortlessly charming without trying too hard. Spend time wandering its streets, lingering in quiet piazzas, and letting Verona unfold slowly—and you'll understand why so many people fall for it.

Winter Park Resort is a Colorado favorite located about 70 miles northwest of Denver. Originally built by the city of Denver as a winter park for its residents, Winter Park Resort has continually operated since 1939.

The ski area is known for its abundant early and late snow with terrain for all ability types. Winter Park spans across two distinct mountains and is home to a great mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. Mary Jane Mountain is home to amazing tree skiing, world-class moguls, and wide-open alpine bowls.

The resort contains modern amenities with an extensive well developed trail system. The village base contains multiple lodging, dining and shopping options.

Ski and Snowboard Terrain

The resort consists of three interconnected mountain peaks (and seven "territories")— Winter Park, Mary Jane, and Vasquez Ridge — which share a common lift ticket. Mary Jane, opened in 1975, has a separate base area and is known for its moguls, tree skiing, hidden huts and generally more difficult terrain. Skiing magazine ranks Mary Jane the top mogul skiing area in North America, including the above-tree line terrain of Parsenn Bowl. Vasquez Ridge, opened in 1986, offers intermediate terrain and mogul runs. With a summit elevation of 12,060' and a base elevation of 9,000', Winter Park offers 3,060' of vertical, 3,081 acres of skiable terrain, and 162 trails. The terrain mix is 24% Green (39), 39% Blue (63), and 37% Black/Double Black (60). Annual snowfall is over 327".
