Enjoy the scenery and have fun sailing on the Potomac River, whether you are a beginner or seasoned sailor. Learn the fundamentals of sailing or just relax on board.

We sail from Belle Haven Marina in Alexandria, Virginia, located south of Old Town Alexandria on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and adjacent to Dyke Marsh.

Getting Here | Belle Haven Marina

This is NOT the marina closest to Reagan-National Airport.

The sailboats are 19-foot Flying Scots, which are very stable and easy to sail. They are open boats, with no cover, so dress appropriately for the weather (sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, sun shirt, waterproof jacket and shoes/sandals that may get wet). Also bring a water bottle on board. The group meets at the marina, outside the office, which is a trailer, and not at the dock.

You are in good hands with a skipper on each boat, who are club members with extensive sailing experience.

Weather permitting, we sail for two hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays through mid-November (see the sailing schedule for the dates, times and to sign up). To ensure you get on a boat, reservations are required two days in advance on the sign-up page.

The cost for SCWDC members is $30 cash per sail and non-members are welcome for $35. Pay in cash (the exact amount would be appreciated) to the SCWDC volunteer trip leader before the sail begins. Check-in is 15 minutes before the sail so we can get out on time.

Before your first sail of the season, you MUST sign an online sailing liability waiver (acknowledgement of risks) that is required by Belle Haven Marina.

This only needs to be done once during each sailing season. If you forget, you may come early to the marina office to sign the waiver.

We do not sail if it is raining, or if there is not enough or too much wind. The trip leader will notify you by email if a sail is canceled. If you sign up and then cannot come, send a text or email to the trip leader as soon as possible.

After sailing, we continue socializing (at your own expense) at The Haven, a small, casual restaurant that is very close to the marina. It is located at 1401 Belle Haven Road, Alexandria, VA 22307.

Trip Leaders Needed
The sailing program depends on volunteer trip leaders and skippers to keep it going. We need a trip leader to organize each sail, which includes keeping track of the number of participants, determining how many boats are needed and paying for the boats. This Sunday we're heading west on the WO&D Trail. Meet at the Vienna Community Center for introductions and to go over the plan. Ride to Herndon (10 miles) and loop back to Vienna. Herndon Station (see pic above), is 8.8 miles.

When we get back into Vienna, we'll stop for Lunch on the trail at the Caboose Tavern (optional) then ride a short distance (.8 miles) back to the community center.

RIDE START TIME: 10:00 AM - Arrive early to use bathroom, pump tires, etc.

DISTANCE: 20 miles

SPEED: 10-12 mph

TERRAIN: Paved Trail - mostly flat with one moderate incline

WHAT TO BRING: Water, snacks, inner tube, bike lock, cash

Please ensure that your bike is in good working condition and that your tires are properly inflated ~ Helmets are required on all rides!

We will leave from the Marina Parking lot and pick up the trail under the GW parkway bridge to the Mt. Vernon Trail. Cross over Memorial bridge down to Ohio Drive. We will pick up the Rock Creek trail to Thompson's Boat house where we'll detour to pick up the Capital Crescent trail by the Waterfront. Follow Capital Crescent to Bethesda then loop back the way we came. Approximately 20 miles.

We will be staying at the Talamore Villas which are next to the Talamore Resort Clubhouse. Easily walkable to the clubhouse, the Talamore Villa complex is about 5 miles from Downtown Southern Pines and 5 miles from the Village of Pinehurst.

Each of the two-bedroom villas have 2 beds in each rooms for a total of 4 beds per 2-bedroom villa and 2 full baths. There is a TV in the Living room and a TV in each bedroom. The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc. There is a full-sized stove, fridge, and microwave. There is a stackable washer and dryer with some laundry detergent and dryer sheets. Also, there will be coffee to get us started. Most condos include daily housekeeping services. Arrival time 3 pm, departure time 11 am.

On Monday, we’ll play the Legacy Golf Links. Originally crafted by Nicklaus design. The Legacy is proud to be one of only three courses in the area that has played host to a USGA National Championship Legacy has been awarded 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest and was selected as one of the Top 50 Golf Courses in the country for customer service. Make it a full day, join the Out and Back BTTS Bike Ride before the PICNIC.

Our annual members' June picnic & party will be held at the Island Time Bar & Grill, Columbia Island Marina, VA, near the Pentagon. Our event space is outdoors, on a pergola covered patio, plus with picnic tables on the adjoining grassy picnic area. We'll provide heavy hors d'oeuvres, buffet style, selected by our picnic crew.

Drinks are not provided but are available for purchase at the outdoor patio bar, or inside. No outside food or drinks allowed.

This year we will have a nominal fee of $10 (members) to partially cover the cost. "Rain or Shine", no refunds. Non-members are also welcome to attend for $15. Registration and payment must be in advance and due by 12 noon on Saturday, June 13. This will allow us to order the correct amount of food and supplies. No "WALK IN" registrations at the door. Advance registrations only!

Point of Rocks to Harper's Ferry and Back - 27 miles

The Beautiful C&O Canal!

This ride starts at the MARC train parking lot at. Point of Rocks, MD. We venture down to the C&O canal and begin our trip to Harper's Ferry. We will rest for a bit then return back to Point of Rocks.

All along the C&O canal. To ride the C&O you need at least 28mm tires - no road bike tires. Bringing a spare tire tube is highly recommended for the C&O as well as a CO2 catridge (for quick inflation). A patch kit is a really good idea as well. We will get lunch afterward in Point of Rocks (optional)

This golf getaway will offer challenging golf, luxurious lodging, indulgent spa experiences, and invigorating sports and fitness options at the Heritage Hills Resort. Unique dining experiences are available both inside and on the outside patio and upstairs deck at Heritage Hills Resort.

On Friday, we'll golf Briarwood Golf Club, featured on the Golf Digest Must Play List and played host to the Futures Lady Professional Golf Tour for 10 years. Briarwood’s “18” championship holes lie in a peaceful, rural setting nestled in the gently, rolling hills of South Central Pennsylvania. In 2011 the course went through a complete tee complex and bunkers renovation which enhanced the spacious, contoured fairways and great greens to provide enjoyable rounds for players of all abilities.

Saturday, we'll head to Honey Run Golf Club, a championship course which has hosted numerous amateur and professional golf events and outings including the Nike Tour and LPGA Futures Tour. Honey Run was designed by the noted golf course architect Edmond Ault and considered by many to be one of the “Best” course layouts in Central Pennsylvania.

Sunday, we'll stay at Heritage Hills to play their traditional golf course, designed to challenge and enthrall experienced players and casual players alike with its beautifully maintained fairways, native shrubbery, and cool waterways. The greens are the backdrop to this 18-hole championship course spread across nearly 6,500 yards of rolling terrain.

Cancellations: A $45 cancellation fee applies to all cancellations. Cancellations after June 15, 2026, will also be liable for all unrecoverable expenses, including 3% credit card transaction fees. Additionally, all or any credits to be made will be charged a minimal processing fee of 5% for any such refunds or the following percentages.

Friday, we'll head to Ravenwood Golf Club, an award-winning 18 hole course. Ravenwood has hosted many USGA & PGA qualifiers as well as the home of the 2003 & 2009 New York Men's Amateur Golf Championships. The championship golf course layout has bent grass tees, greens and fairways but with five sets of tees, it can be a fair and challenging test for golfers of all skill levels.

Saturday brings us to The Links at Greystone, with a maximum length of 7,215 yards, a course rating of 74.3 and a slope of 130. The Links has a championship-caliber layout worthy of Golf Digest's coveted 4.5 Star Rating. Only a handful of other golf courses across the country have ever been rated better.

Sunday, take a break to enjoy the Finger Lakes! The area is home to many local breweries and nearly a hundred wineries, so explore on your own or go with Crush Beer & Wine Tours which specializes in private Finger Lakes wine tours and guided winery experiences across New York’s premier wine region. They offer professionally chauffeured winery tours and wine tastings throughout the Finger Lakes, including Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, and Keuka Lake. Or, take advantage of the hotel's close proximity to the Erie Canal Trail, which runs parallel to the canal, is an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, jogging, and biking.

Monday, we'll golf at Reservoir Creek Golf Club, a beautiful course with expansive vistas and challenging holes for all levels of play. Rated the #1 public course in Rochester, NY by GOLF Magazine in May 2023, Reservoir Creek is a par 71 course, and a hidden gem south of Canandaigua Lake with a maximum length of 6,294 yards.

Vernon Trail, through Old Town Alexandria, cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to National Harbor. Then loop back and return to Columbia Island Marina in time for BTTS!

On our way to Ocean City, we'll enjoy a round of golf at Nutters Crossing which offers beautiful lush fairways rolling over gently sloping hills, past eight water hazards and through a maze of over 50 bunkers, to rolling greens built to USGA specifications.

Then we'll make our way to the Hilton Garden Inn Ocean City Oceanfront, located steps from the beach and the historic Boardwalk’s shops and eateries. Enjoy ocean views from a private balcony in every room, restaurants, and the indoor pool.

Relax Wednesday morning before we reconvene for another round of golf at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links. This Scottish-style links is the only area course to feature bent-grass on the fairways and greens. No less than 17 of the 18 holes have a bay view with several holes having direct bay frontage, where you can start your ball over the water to shorten the hole. The Dyes have certainly created situations of risk and reward that will quicken the heart rate of even the most experienced golfer. From the back tees this championship quality course is capable of hosting a PGA Tour stop but forgiving enough from the middle tees to satisfy golfers of all skill levels.

Before heading home on Thursday, we'll stop for a final round of golf at Newport Bay Golf Course and Ocean City Golf Club. The Newport Bay Course at Ocean City Golf Club is one of the most beautiful and scenic golf course in Ocean City MD and on the East Coast. All 18 holes feature bay or marsh views. The scenic views coupled with the challenging course layout will certainly make Newport Bay one of your favorite golf courses. Newport Bay’s design challenges golfers of all levels. The course layout will test your strategic thinking abilities as the subtle contours bring traps and hazards in play at every turn… all while enjoying the most beautiful golf course setting in the Mid-Atlantic.

Enjoy three rounds of golf near the Virginia Beach resort area while staying in the ocean-front Marriott Courtyard Virginia Beach.

On Tuesday, we’ll begin with 18 holes at the Pete Dye designed Virginia Beach National Golf Club , which plays to a par of 72 from four tees ranging from 5,124 to 7054 in length, with a rating/slope from 73.8/130 to 74/136.

Wednesday we'll play at Cypress Point Country Club,, an 18-hole, Tom Clark designed 72-par course featuring Bermuda fairways and Bentgrass greens. This course offers 4 tees ranging from 5,248 to 6,541 in length with a rating/slope from 70.6/121 to 71.1/124. The course, nestled in a quiet, out of the way, golf-club community adjoining Lake Lawson and Lake Smith, is a nine time winner of the VA Pilot’s “Best of the Best” Award.

Prior to returning home, we'll play the Heron Ridge Golf Club, a public, 72-par, 18-hole championship course designed by Gene Bates & Fred Couples. Known for its natural beauty, featuring wetlands, lakes, elevation changes, and mature trees, this course offers 5 tees ranging from 5011 to 7017 yards with a rating/slope from 68.5/111 to 73.9/131. Heron Ridge has a full practice facility (driving range, putting green) and a clubhouse with dining.

Between rounds, we’ll stay in one of the top Virginia Beach oceanfront hotels, the Marriott Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South where sand meets surf & the boardwalk bids outdoor entertainment. The hotel offers spacious, beachfront rooms with private balconies and sweeping views of the Atlantic. The hotel has an on-site restaurant, a 24-hour fitness center, and heated indoor pool. This facility is conveniently located in the heart of the oceanfront resort area, within walking distance of local restaurants and nightlife. Of note: while the room fee does not include breakfast, this location gives folks many breakfast dining options.
