About the Snow Sports Museum: Founded in 2018 by passionate snow sports enthusiasts, the Snow Sports Museum of West Virginia (SSMWV) preserves and celebrates the state’s rich snow sports history. West Virginia’s first winter playgrounds date back to the 1940s at Oglebay Resort and the 1950s in Canaan Valley. Previously, the Museum inducted SCWDC members Hal Leich, Gorman Young, and Ed Couch, Jr, into its first Hall of Fame class. These members were were instrumental in creating SCWDC's ski slope on fallow farmland in the early 1950's, it was named the "Driftland." This was the beginning of West Virginia's development of snow sports activities. The Canaan Valley Ski resort was established as a result of SCWDC's effort, it is near the Driftland site. The largest nearby town is Davis, the site of the museum. SCWDC's Yearbook 1936-1986 in the Chapter titled "1950's," gives an account of how Gorman Young and Hal Leich took an exploratory trip to West Virginia to find snow; they found it! and then enlisted SCWDC members to build a ski slope with rope tow and warming cabin. See page 65 of the Handbook to read Edmund Couch's account about the building of the Driftland.
