Len Wheat Bushwhacking Hike No. 1

  • 11/19/2016
  • 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Shenandoah National Park

Join us on this first of a series of five monthly bushwhacking hikes to various sites of mountain resident relics in the Shenandoah National Park.  This first hike will lead us into the Hogwallow Flats area on the northern flanks of Mt. Marshall to find the 'famous' applesauce house of PATC lore in the northern district.  We'll follow old roads as well as pure bushwhacking (although we'll not really need to 'whack' many bushes) as we locate both cultural sites and natural sites of beauty.

Due to the nature of the paths taken, this hike, while only about six miles, may be considered moderately difficult, while we proceed throughout this region.  This is also Bob Pickett's monthly 'natural history' hike, so expect to stop and learn more about our natural world as we travel.  Dinner at the Country Cafe in Washington, VA after the hike is optional.  As always, we'll meet at 8 am on the north side of the Vienna metro.  INFO:  Bob Pickett, pickett@us.net/240/457-0352.
