Date and Time: October 7 – 10, 2016 at the Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge

Leader: Bob Pickett  240-457-0352

Information:  West Virginia mountains supported untouched virgin forests until a hundred years ago.  These same lands now support mature forests and numerous trails that often follow former logging roads providing easy hiking and access to remote regions full of natural beauty.

Our home for three days, the Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge allows comfortable accommodations and good meals, while providing a beautiful wooded location within the Monongahela National Forest.

Join us on daily hikes and learn about nature and the forest inhabitants that call these mountains their home.  We'll also pass artifacts and learn about the lumber, mining and coking industries that proliferated in this region only a few generations ago.   Participants will be given choices of hikes for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning (half-day).  Bob  Pickett will lead daily hikes of about 8 miles, helping participants learn more about both the cultural and natural history of this unique region.  Participants may choose to do different hikes or relax at the Lodge.

Directions: Participants will drive to the Lodge, approximately three hours from the beltway. Take I-66 W to I-81 S near Strasburg VA. Follow I-81 S a short distance to the exit for Rt. 55 W to Wardensville, WV.  The ‘almost completed’ US 48 (known to most as Corridor H), takes drivers from Wardensville to Davis, WV.  After turning left onto  Rte 32 towards Davis, the Blackwater Falls State Park is to the right at the Exxon station just before entering the town of Davis.  Follow signs to the Lodge.

Costs:  Rooms are no longer available at the Blackwater Falls Lodge.  However, the nearby Alpine Lodge (five minutes away) is available at a reduced price.  Please contact Bob Pickett for alternate accommodations.  Meals are purchased individually by the participants.  Please notify the leader if you want to  be considered for doubling with another person.

Food:  Meals can be taken at the Lodge cafeteria.  Lunches can be purchased by participants from the Lodge (bag lunch) or in the grocery store in Davis or bring your own.  Dinners will be at restaurants located in Davis (Siriannis and Hellbender Burritos are favorites).
