Let's hike Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park.
Join leader Chris Klocek on this classic hike in Shenandoah National Park. If you haven't done it yet, Spring is a great time to go. If you have hiked it before, it's a great time to go again.
Length: 8.8 miles
Effort Level: Strenuous due to some rock scrambling to the summit (no special gear required for the rock scramble).

This hike takes 6-8 hours. It can be done faster, but what's the rush? Be prepared for a good workout; by the end of the hike, you will feel like you have done a full day's work.

What to Bring: Water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear, camera. Some people like to hike with trekking poles. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Sandals and flip flops are not appropriate. Dress in layers.
Carpool Location - If you would like a ride from Centreville or can take additional passengers, meet at the Centreville Park and Ride.
If you have a full car, feel free to meet us at the Old Rag Parking lot. The hike starts at 8:30 AM.
Directions to Old Rag Parking Lot:
From I-66 West, take Exit 43 A to U.S. 29 South.
Go 11.5 miles, exit onto U.S. 211 West.
Go 29 miles, turn left onto U.S. 522.
Go .8 miles, turn right onto Route 231.
Go 7.3 miles, turn right onto SR 602 (Sharp Rock Road). Stay on the left side of Hughes River. The route numbers change to 601, 707 and then 600. Do not cross Hughes River.
Turn Right onto Nethers Road to parking lot.

Rain or Shine, but not Thunderstorms: We will hike in light to moderate rain, but not if heavy rain or thunderstorms are likely.
Suggested Carpool Contribution from Centreville Park and Ride
1 passenger: $20*
2 passengers: $13 per passenger*
3 or more passengers: $9 per passenger*
* This includes the passenger's contribution to the $20 park entrance fee.
When in doubt, be generous with your driver so that they will want to offer you a ride in the future.
Shenandoah National Park fees: $20 per vehicle or $40 for an annual pass.
